Position Overview 

The Lovejoy Center is seeking a creative and strategic undergraduate student to serve as Communications Specialist. This position is ideal for students interested in social media strategy, nonprofit communications, and cross-team collaboration. The Communications Specialist will be responsible for developing and executing comprehensive communication strategies across multiple platforms to enhance the Lovejoy Center's visibility and engagement. In addition to independent work, this position will collaborate with all center staff to highlight a variety of content, from policy memos to archival photos and more. 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

1. Strategic Planning

  • Develop a comprehensive social media and communications strategy and content calendar for each center platform (LinkedIn, Instagram, Bluesky, website, and newsletter)
  • Collaborate with the Program Coordinator to identify storytelling opportunities and capture marketable content during the Lovejoy Center's regular operations
  • Collaborate with the Digital Archives Research Specialist to curate and share archival material related to the legacy of Thomas Lovejoy
  • Collaborate with the Biodiversity Policy Research Specialist to curate and share policy memos for public engagement in local conservation issues

2. Content Development

  • Create engaging, mission-driven content tailored to platform-specific audiences and formats
  • Post weekly across all center social media platforms

3. Analysis & Documentation

  • Track engagement metrics to provide monthly reports on communication effectiveness
  • Maintain organized digital asset library
  • Document successful content strategies and best practices for future reference

Minimum Qualifications

  • Active University of Arizona undergraduate student in good academic standing and enrolled in at least 6 credits
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency with social media platforms (Instagram, LinkedIn, Bluesky, etc.)
  • Experience with content creation tools (Canva or Adobe Creative Suite preferred)
  • Basic understanding of social media analytics and digital marketing principles
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously

Preferred Qualifications

  • Major in Communications, Marketing, Digital Media, Journalism, or related field
  • Experience managing social media accounts for organizations or businesses
  • Knowledge of accessibility best practices in digital communications
  • Photography and/or video editing skills
  • Experience with the nonprofit sector and community engagement

 

Supervision and Support

The Communications Specialist will report directly to the Lovejoy Center Director and will be mentored by the Program Coordinator.

Allowable Work Hours

During the semester, student employees are limited to 25 hours/week (20 hours/week for international students) across ALL U of A positions.

This position expects 10-15 hours a week and is work-study eligible.
