Position Overview 

The Lovejoy Center is seeking a meticulous and research-oriented undergraduate student to serve as Digital Archives Research Specialist. This position offers a unique opportunity to conduct comprehensive archival research on prominent conservation biologist Thomas Lovejoy, documenting his contributions to environmental science and his connections to the Lovejoy Center's mission. The successful candidate will develop essential research skills while contributing to the preservation of important scientific and institutional history. This position will collaborate with the Communication Specialist to identify storytelling opportunities for social media, website, and newsletter channels. 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct systematic online research to locate, catalog, and analyze all available digital materials related to Thomas Lovejoy, including in academic databases, news archives, and institutional repositories
  • Create catalogs and reports on Thomas Lovejoy in thematic areas such as:
    • Comprehensive professional biography, including education, career milestones, honors, awards, major achievements, and innovations in the field
    • Scientific publications, including peer-reviewed articles, books, and conference presentations
    • Media appearances, interviews, and public speaking engagements
    • Professional networks and collaborations with other scientists and institutions, including Camp 41 and organizations in the Brazil Amazon
  • Examine Lovejoy's relationship with the Amazon rainforest, involvement in policy advocacy, and his approach to mentorship
  • Collaborate with the Communications Specialist and Program Coordinator to curate archival materials to promote the legacy of Thomas Lovejoy in social media 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Active University of Arizona undergraduate student in good academic standing and enrolled in at least 6 credits
  • Strong research and analytical skills with experience using academic databases
  • Excellent written communication skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and manage long-term projects
  • Basic understanding of citation formats and research methodology

Preferred Qualifications

  • Major in History, Environmental Studies, Biology, Library Science, or related field
  • Experience with archival research methods and digital humanities tools
  • Familiarity with scientific literature and environmental conservation topics
  • Knowledge of Thomas Lovejoy's work or tropical ecology research
  • Experience with database management and digital asset organization
  • Portuguese or Spanish language proficiency

Supervision and Support

The Digital Archives Research Specialist will report directly to the Lovejoy Center Director and will be mentored by the Program Coordinator. 

Allowable Work Hours

During the semester, student employees are limited to 25 hours/week (20 hours/week for international students) across ALL U of A positions.

This position expects 10-15 hours a week and is work-study eligible.
