Joshua Tewksbury is an ecologist and conservation scientist whose career spans research, leadership, and global collaboration. As Director of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, he leads one of the world’s premier institutions for tropical science, supporting a wide range of fundamental and use-inspired research, engagement, and science to conservation work across the tropics.
His work bridges ecological theory and applied conservation, with a focus on the challenges of biodiversity loss, climate change, and sustainable development. Prior to STRI, Tewksbury held leadership roles at Future Earth, WWF, and the University of Washington, where he built platforms that connect science with policy, innovation, and practice at global scales.
Throughout his career, he has championed boundary-organizations, inclusive, transdisciplinary science, capacity exchange, the translation of research into actionable outcomes in the tropics and around the world. His approach reflects a deep commitment to fostering networks that empower scientists, communities, and policymakers to address the world’s most pressing environmental challenges.
